Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and T (cTnT) are the current gold standards for detecting myocardial necrosis. Elevation in the setting of NSTE ACS is associated with a markedly increased risk of death and reinfarction. GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors can blunt the magnitude of this troponin release in NSTE ACS. Furthermore, troponin elevation identifies a subset of patients who enjoy the greatest benefit from both GP IIb/IIIa inhibition and early invasive therapy. [1] [1]
