Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase is a bacterial enzyme that detoxifies the antibiotic chloramphenicol. It is responsible for chloramphenicol resistance in bacteria. This enzyme covalently attaches an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to the chloramphenicol molecule so that it is unable to bind to the ribosome.
