Podocin is a protein which lines the podocytes and assists in maintaining the barrier at the glomerular basement membrane.

Mutations in the podocin gene NPHS2 can cause nephrotic syndrome, such as Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) or Minimal Change Disease (MCD).
